Three Phases of South Korean Modern Art and Its Impacts on Democratization explores the cultural “imprints” that artists of the democratization era sought to leave for future generations.
The study traces the evolution of South Korean modern art from the aftermath of the Korean War through the 1990s, emphasizing how abstraction and experimentation developed under censorship and political suppression.
By focusing on the major movements of Dansaekhwa, Experimental Art, and Minjung Art, it highlights how visual art not only reflected the realities of authoritarian rule but also contributed to shaping and inspiring democratization movements.
